Fire, Food & Fun! ... Sounds like Lohri!

Hello All!

I hope you’re keeping well and wrapping yourselves up warm in this cold weather!!

It feels like it’s been a while since I wrote a “proper” post!  I’m feeling super tired from this weekend’s shenanigans but wanted to put this together before my baby brain left me speechless!

So what exactly IS Lohri?! If you were to google “Lohri” (trust me, I’ve tried it!),  you’ll be given about a hundred different reasons as to why it’s celebrated.

It came up in conversation with a friend, and in turn she asked her mother in law who kindly summarised it for us: it's harvest time in Punjab and we all get together to celebrate the new things in our lives. It's mostly celebrated by those who have newborn babies or those that are newly weds. Lohri is not a Sikh celebration but more a cultural one.

We all get together, eat food (the harvest crop is spinach, which makes saag) and light a bonfire. We then sing old Punjab folk songs and dance.  Basically a reason to have a party! :)

As Arjun marked our "new beginning", this is how we celebrated. 

In the afternoon, we held a religious function at the Gurdwara (Sikh temple) where paat (prayers) was recited and kirtan (holy hymns) were sung.  Although Lohri is not a religious occasion, I use any opportunity to seek God’s blessings.

In the evening, we had a party in a marquee at home where our friends and family joined us to celebrate the birth of Arjun.  Here we lit a bonfire during the night, and people sang and danced around it.  The rest of the night was spent partying away to Bhangra and old Lohri songs played by the DJ :)  How did you celebrate yours?

 

So how exactly did we manage to plan the party with a baby? Not easily in short! Well not easily compared to how it was prior to having a baby but to be fair it wasn’t really that difficult. I tried to keep things as simple as possible (by my own standards which probably isn’t very simple at all!).

Before, I was the type of person that really didn’t like relying on others for help – I preferred to do things by myself.  When Arjun was born and because of the nature of my birth and the state I was in after, I quickly learnt that drawing upon your support network is not a bad thing. And that’s exactly what I do when I need to now. I did need a little help from others to plan for this party and I’m so grateful to have such a great support network.  I don’t really like to do things in halves either which doesn’t help!  

Organising in advance is definitely key!  I’m definitely a list orientated person (one of my many prominent traits!) and that’s just the way I manage to get things done! Thank God for excel (geeky accountant!) and for the notes section in my phone. I kept an extended to do list and also a few separate ones for the days leading up to the party so that I knew what needed to be done and when.

I asked my parents to babysit a few times especially when I had to visit the dress shop in Southall to get my outfit fitted (a few trips!).  Although I could have taken Arjun with me, I do find it quite tedious lugging him and his bags around (he’s a hefty 18lbs now!) especially when in a rush.  When time is of the essence, I find it easier to leave Arjun with either set of grandparents to get things done quicker.

Arjun’s grandmummies did the cooking and the food was absolutely delicious. I left the kitchen side of things to both our mum’s and tried my hardest not to get involved (I’m a control freak!).  We are truly blessed to have such amazing mothers/grandmothers who go over and beyond for us.

I decided to put together the centre pieces whilst Arjun played with his toys next to me as I knew he’d find the popping bright colours mesmerizing and he did!  I tried to involve Arjun in as much of the planning as I could to make my own life easier and to let him have a bit of fun too!

 

As always, my sisters were on hand to help with last minute bits – although not so much with the direct party planning, the night before they were at our house to take care of Arjun whilst I finished off some last minute preparations.

The week before I realised I’d completely forgotten to get any drinks (definitely baby brain!) so to save myself the hassle of having to go out to get them, I ordered them online and they were delivered the next day :)

To save myself having to traipse around the shops looking for decorations etc, I heavily relied on online shopping as you can see below.  The only real con of this is not being able to see before you buy.  But pictures online are pretty accurate. It saved me a lot of time and hassle especially with a baby! I was also able to compare prices and designs.

The day before the party, Preetam had taken the day off to help with last minute bits such as shifting heavy items for me.  As we were both in the marquee finishing bits off, we decided to wrap Arjun up in his snow suit and take him out with us in his little car. We whizzed him around and got him involved – for example I hung the table diamonds in a bag to his car and took him with me to each table to scatter them.  We made it fun :)

I ensured Arjun’s bags were packed the night before for the temple and for the party so that I didn’t have to faff in the morning.  His outfits as well as ours were all ironed well in advance. Arjun wore jeans and a shirt for the religious function and an indian sherwani for the party.

We hired waitresses on the night to serve and replenish the food and to manage things in general.  They also ensured that a lot of the clearing up was done on the night.

So with a few highlights of how I managed to put things together, what theme did I go for? I always love planning decor for events.  As Lohri is associated with bright colours, I went for a colourful theme in the marquee.

We had colourful roof draping with a star cloth over the dance floor and fairy lights on the fence feature which the marquee company arranged.

I went for colourful centrepieces using aqua beads which are not only cheap and cheerful but also so effective in achieving popping colours.  These can be purchased from most party shops and online – the cocktail glasses required two packets each to fill and the fish bowls required four.  I purchased mine from eBay at £0.99 for two packets (Aqua Beads). 

I also used bright artificial silk flowers for the centre pieces which I purchased from Whittington’s online previously (Silk Artificial Flowers).

I used table diamonds on the tables to bring out some colour and these were purchased from eBay at £1.55 a packet, I only used a quarter of each packet so have lots left for the next function too (Table Diamonds) .

The gold runners were purchased from eBay for £24,99 for 10.  (Gold Organza Table Runners).

 

I also purchased colourful napkins to add to the pops of colour, again purchased from eBay at £2.29 for a pack of 50 (Napkins).

 

Arjun’s colourful personalised decoration that we’d made last week was put up near the entrance.  

I set up a kids play area which included a large wipe down mat, a ball pit and a few large toys.  Given it was a party to celebrate the birth of a baby, it was only fair to ensure all the little ones were catered for! All the babies enjoyed the toy area and it’ll definitely be making an appearance at all future parties! – That means a slightly larger marquee and a slightly larger budget especially as Mr’s social circle increases – he’s a social butterfly!

We had a Lohri cake (as we need any excuse for cake!) - Arjun was more interested in demolishing it!

The food was all vegetarian as we are vegetarian and there was no alcohol.  The menu included samosas and dokra (Indian savoury cake) for starters with Danish pastries and tea.  We had saag (spinach) and makki di roti which is traditionally what is cooked at Lohri and also paneer (Indian cheese) and dhal (lentils).  For dessert we had kheer (rice pudding) which is another traditional Lohri dish.  We also had out some baby snacks to cater for the little ones :)

We don’t have meat or alcohol at our functions as we are vegetarian and tee total for religious reasons and to be honest, most of our parties are pretty crazy without (our friends and family know how to have a good time!). I often wonder what would happen in the presence of alcohol!!  

There was lots of dancing to Bhangra music (thanks Mr DJ Bob Motion Music) and we also had a little zumba session (thanks Rasna!) which Arjun’s grandmummies and aunties absolutely loved!

 

Arjun loved all the attention – he’s generally a people person (like his mummy!). He had a great play session with his buddies and also had a little boogie (defo doesn’t take after his daddy who doesn’t go anywhere near a dancefloor!).  He loved working the camera; he definitely isn’t camera shy! He wasn’t at all phased by the bonfire which I was surprised about! The cutest was when he fell asleep on his daddy’s shoulder as soon as we’d finished cutting the cake – great timing Arj!

It was our first time hosting a party since Arjun’s birth and wow I didn’t really think about how I took the smallest for granted before Arjun came along and how now those felt like quite a challenge - for example needing to run in and out of the house to drop the centre pieces from inside to the marquee! I didn’t want to leave Arjun inside the house alone. But somehow, we managed to pull it off! I found the experience so rewarding and often mothers lose their identity – we become just “mums” – it was nice to be able to express myself in another way that I love – through organising events! I did whatever I could to ensure my life was made as easy as possible as highlighted above so that I could also enjoy the planning and the day. 

It was a tiring day and a tiring build up – we went to bed at 3am forgetting that there is no such thing as a lie in anymore!  But somehow we managed to find the energy on Sunday to crack on!

It was a great day and we are so grateful for how blessed we are – people made such an effort, we couldn’t have asked for anything more! Thank you to all those that made the effort to be a part of it. Can’t wait for Arjun to be old enough to watch the footage back! – now for planning Arjun’s first birthday! :)

Baby Brain Weekly Memoir: 16th January 2015

This week has been such a crazy busy week and if I hadn't jotted things down I probably would have forgotten what we've been up to!

We've been mainly preparing for Arjun's first Lohri party (a separate post to follow on what this is and what we did!) which is taking place tomorrow. I'm so excited to host our first party since he's arrived! Organising parties and get togethers is my forte and I've really missed doing it. I didn't quite realise how challenging it would be with a baby! But I think we'll be ok nevertheless! (I hope so anyway!!). 

I'm currently sitting on the sofa with my feet up eating a cinnamon roll (I swear I've already burnt it off with the amount of running around I've done today!) whilst Arjun snoozes.

I thought I'd use the opportunity to catch up with my weekly memoir post :)  It may be a little quick and unstructured - do forgive me! With lots to still do, and with the threat of Arjun's nap ending any time soon, time is not on my side right now!

So this week Arjun had two play dates with slightly older babies; Peyaam (who is 3) and Bachittar (who is 1 and a half). I've noticed older kids aren't as interested in smaller babies as babies are in them. Arjun absolutely loves babies and was especially excited when both were over where as the older babies were more interested in the toys lol. He had fun on both play dates and as usual loves being made a fuss over by his aunts and uncles!

We got a bit messy this week - we made a lohri decoration using Arjun's feet and I managed to get a handprint too. I really struggle with hand prints as he likes to scrunch his hands up and it comes out more like a splutter than a hand!  My sister lectured me on not always trying to create "perfect" hand/foot prints but letting Arjun explore in whatever way he wants to (the joys of having a nursery nurse as a sister!). We had lots of fun though (as always!). Arjun seemed a lot more aware and interested in all the colours - he found it funny getting the paint from his hands on his feet and vice versa! The bath after messy play was interesting!

We went swimming on Sunday with Water Babies and it was the first time Arjun didn't cry when being taken under water! Hurray! I was super proud. I hope it lasts. His dad is brilliant with him in the water - id panic!!

After swimming we had a really lazy day after a very long time. We stayed in bed and watched TV pretty much all day! It's weird that those kinda days make me feel a lot more tired! I definitely think there is such as a thing as having too much sleep! But heyho I figured I'd need to rest before the busy week ahead.

Arjun went to visit both sets of grandparents during the week. He was really ratty and quite a handful at Preetam's parents; even Junior didn't cheer him up! I've noticed that when he's over tired and he's passed a certain point, then it's a really long and tiresome battle trying to settle him! Does any one else have this problem? How do you deal with it?

 

On his visit to my parents, he wore this super cute Mickey Mouse tracksuit from Primarni ;) (Primark). It's perfect for play dates and just lounging. Arjun is super comfortable and the quality is surprisingly good! Spending ridiculous amounts on clothes for Arjun is pointless as he's growing so fast and I love buys like these! :)

This week he had one pretty bad night where he woke four times - the first time he woke up screaming. It was terrifying, I thought someone had broken in to the house! I haven't heard him scream like that before - it was a really terrified scream. I'm assuming he had a nightmare :( I can't wait until he can talk and tell me what's wrong in situations like that especially. It's distressing as a parent to hear your child like that and feel pretty helpless! After that, I ended up taking him to bed with Preetam and I - we don't often co sleep but I can generally sense when Arjun needs the comfort of his mummy and daddy and that was definitely one of those times!

 

Arjun also accompanied me on some of my Lohri party prepping missions this week such as visiting a party warehouse to buy some decoration - he loved all the colours!

Today Arjun visited High Wycombe with his daddy for a job whilst I cracked on with preps for tomorrow. When he got home, he accompanied me in the marquee in his little mini car. He is adorable :) 

 

All in all we've had a pretty tiring week rushing around but I'm looking forward to updating you all on how tomorrow goes!

Baby Brain Weekly Memoir: 9th January 2015

Good afternoon all :)

Hope you, babies and bumps are all doing well!

So I thought it would be a nice idea for me to do a weekly post on what we’ve been up to during the week. Some weeks will seem a lot more interesting/heavier than others! I have such a severe case of baby brain that I’ve had to jot down what we’ve been up to in a notes page on my phone on a daily basis!

I’ve only just started writing this post and Arjun has just woken up, I’ve put him next to me in bed whilst I write this post and he’s lying on his belly (meant to be sleeping!). Every time I look at him, he smiles and so do his eyes.  He makes my heart melt.  It makes me want to cry :( One day my baby boy is going to be an independent man who no longer dotes on his mummy!

So here goes..!

This week we hosted a dinner for Preetam’s newly married sister Mane and her husband Jas and their family.  Arjun really enjoyed it as he loves socialising with big groups – probably because the whole room centres around him! Who doesn’t like a bit of attention!?  I’ve noticed he especially loves grandmas and Jas’ Maaji (grandma) is by no means an exception!  He absolutely adores her.

Sunday we took Arjun to his weekly swimming lesson with Water Babies.  He’s on term two now but still really doesn’t like his head being dunked under water!

We specifically chose Sunday classes because I’m not a very strong swimmer and I’m certainly not a confident one (my feet have to be able to touch the floor and there is no way you’ll ever catch me with even my ears below water let alone my eyes!) so we thought it would be a better idea for Preetam to get in the pool with him. He looks a little less like a drowning fish than I do! Plus it meant Preetam gets to spend some quality time on an activity with Arjun too.  

I didn’t want Arjun to pick up on my fears but it looks like he may have inherited some of them! He enjoys the water until he’s under.  I’m hoping with time it’ll get better!

I always go try and go to swimming lessons to watch my little man – it’s fascinating watching him change so much in different environments over time. I often feel the drag of a Saturday night on a Sunday morning (weekends are generally pretty busy!) and don’t fancy getting up and getting dressed especially in this cold, but the thought of missing out on anything he does jumpstarts my backside right out of bed!

I also took Arjun to Kew for some holiday shopping this week with my friend Fiona and her baby Estelle.  Probably not the best day to have taken him, his teeth seemed to cause so much unrest that it made parts of the trip quite difficult.  I often fall in to the habit of not doing too much in public with Arjun incase he “plays up” – there’s always that fear as a new mum of “what will people think” e.g. if my baby screams the restaurant down.  But slowly I’m becoming more and more confident in just getting on with it – so what if he cries? Babies cry, people just gotta deal with it! I was one of those people before that used to get irritated in a restaurant by a screaming baby – karma hey!  Plus he had a legitimate reason – his rosy cheeks and lumpy gums tell me he’s teething. He was a gem the rest of the trip (when he was asleep! Haha).

Arjun also met his Sav Masi (aunti) for the first time.  Sav is one of my best friends of ten years but has recently embarked on a new adventure in Japan.  She wasn’t here when Arjun was born so met him through Skype.  It was lovely seeing them meet face to face for the first time.  She’s a natural :) Arjun took to her.  He’s good with new people at the moment – probably because we have an open house and always have people coming in and out so he’s used to it!

This week Arjun stumbled upon new found fame too! His face got published in a book ... ok not quite but he got his first personalised book from Sav which included his face.  It’s soo cute and I’m sure he’ll find it fascinating seeing his face amidst all these other characters!  You can find this and other personalised picture books at www.itsyourstory.co.uk.

Arjun also got his teeth (well no real teeth but gums!) brushed with Colgate this week.  Prepped him for his play dates with all his little lady friends! I thought now that he’s fully weaned, it would be a good idea to start especially as he has slight reflux and the smell of food vomit is slightly less bearable than milk vomit! Mean mum!

We attended two baby groups this week; one at our local Church which was really more for mums to catch up whilst babies played with toys and the other was music and movement – my favourite of all the baby groups we’ve been to so far.  They have a mixture of play time, rhyme time and baby sensory and Arjun loves it.  His favourite thing today was a tomato soft toy (wonder if he thought it was real!?) and the fibre optic string lights.

 

This week Arjun has slept through the night five out of seven nights. Not holding my breath that this is the new found routine as I know it can revert back to as quick as it came on!

Other things; Arjun tried black beans and strawberries for the first time and also told me he wanted water for the first time(I thought that’s what he was doing at least) by grabbing his sippy cup – but really he thought it would be funny to get water all down his clothes! We also visited my friend Pav who is also about to have a baby and embark on the journey of motherhood! :)

My Golden Little Nuggets!

Hope you're keeping well! I've been meaning to post the below for a while, but been so busy over the festive period!

I wanted to share my top three favourite baby items.  All were cheap and cheerful and oh so useful and can be used for multiple things!

These baskets are so useful for so many baby things! I’ve listed some below:

• Potty bits: I keep a little change kit downstairs to save me having to run up to the change table every time Arjun needs a nappy change.  I keep a few nappies, nappy bags, wipes and some nappy cream in a flexi basket.  It’s especially useful as it’s small and can be tucked away in the living room.
• Our room toy bits: Arjun has toys all over the house and before our room floor would be littered with them! We now keep all his little toys for our room in a little flexi basket helping to keep it a little tidier.
• Night time feed basket:  When we were still giving Arjun milk at night, I used a basket to keep his bottles, formula dispensers, cooled sterile water and a small thermos with hot water in for night feeds.  This saved me having to go down each time.
• Medicine basket:  I keep all his medicines in one of these baskets so it’s easily accessible and so that I can easily see what we have.
• Small items laundry basket: For his socks and vests.

At this price, you really can’t go wrong! I'm going to be getting some more over the next few days to organise Arjun's food cupboard :)

These mats are my absolute favourite! They can be used for so many things!  We have several of the Mickey Mouse ones and I’ve recently purchased a few of the Monkey ones too.

• Craft mat: whenever Arjun and I do arty farty bits, I use this mat to ensure paint and glue doesn’t reach the floor.  It's so quick and easy to clean up.
• Weaning mat: I have two of these mats to place under his highchair when we are doing messy eating so the floor doesn’t get stained – he isn’t able to throw too far just yet! It's quick and easy to wipe down after any messy spills.
• Change mat: these are great as a portable change mat.  I have also purchased some for my parents and in laws house as they take up a lot less room than the standard change mat.

These toy rings are absolutely brilliant! I used to struggle when Arjun first started sitting in a high chair when out.  He’d manage to drop his toys on to the floor (the thought of his toys falling in a restaurant floor sends an OCD mum crazy!) so a friend recommended me to buy some of these (thanks Fiona!).

They can be used for the following:

• Fasten toys to high chair: especially in public places! So Arjun is free to play with his toys and drop them without them touching the ground.  Saves me having to bend down every five minutes too!
• Extend toys from play gym: I also would have found these useful when Arjun was very young and unable to reach his play gym toys to bring them lower down.

All in all a great buy!

Boys and their Toys!

Hey all!

How are you all doing? We've had a really tiring day yesterday with lots of moans and groans from Arjun! :( I always find the days we decide to stay at home (for some rest) are the hardest! He seems to enjoy doing things more than just chilling (definitely his dad's boy!).

When he finally got to sleep I thought I'd catch up with some blogging around my favourite Christmas gifts for Arjun.

So for Christmas, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to get some cute baby toys for Arjun that related to his daddy’s favourite things (so really they were an excuse for Preetam to be able to play with Arjun’s toys!)!

Preetam is a keen motor biker (to my joy (!)) and is also pretty hands on when it comes to other bits too – e.g.  plumbing, car mechanics, electrics and computers! He’s a jack of all trades and I’m hoping Arjun will be super clever just like his daddy and will also share some of his interests! So I thought I’d get him some tools of the trade to start him off young in following in his daddy’s footsteps!

 Below I’ve outlined some of my favourites.

Chicco Ducati Multi Play Race Set

As Preetam absolutely loves motorbikes/superbikes and Ducatis are his favourtie, it was only right to get his boy a set of his own wheels. I’m sure he’s going to be a young motor racing fan himself!  I’m hoping he holds fire on wanting to jump on the back of daddy’s motorbike anytime soon though!

This track is aimed at ages 12-36 months and comes with 4 different functionalities to accommodate the different age groups.

 (1) Firstly you can create a simple straight track with simple controls. Although Arjun is too young to navigate a remote control (in any ordered fashion!), he loves playing with the bikes and tries to push them along the track as they are just the right size for him to handle. The straight track makes it easy for him to do this.

(2) The second is a circle track to interact with the different track features. The added feature of things such as a finish line and bridges means Arjun has something to dismantle.  He loves to dismantle the race track and particularly finds it fun to pull of the bridges – he’s drawn to the vibrant blue flags!

(3) A full figure of 8 race circuit where the remote controls are used for exciting races. This one is Arjun’s favourite, although he is unable to race himself just yet, he absolutely loves watching his daddy and Chacha (uncle) race (bless them for doing so for Arjun’s entertainment purposes!).  He gets really excited and shows it with his screams, laughter and waving his arms about!

(4) The fourth functionality is that the bikes can be used even off the track as Arjun’s first remote control toy once he is old enough.  Although he is too young to use the remote control function, he loves playing with the bikes.

All in all, this toy is a must have for the sons of motor racing loving fathers!  The track is vibrant and appealing to babies.  The super cute dinky bikes are also baby friendly as there are no sharp bits, they are also a good size for babies to hold.

I’m not sure who loves it more – Arjun or his daddy!

 

 

Baby Tool Set

This is one of my most favourite toys for Arjun as they are so simplistic in nature yet so effective.  Preetam is always faffing with his tools and Arjun loves to watch his daddy in action so I thought it would be great to get Arjun his own.  I thought Arjun was a little young to get him a plastic set so set about finding a soft play one. I found it really difficult finding something like this in the UK, but I got lucky and spotted this beauty on eBay in the USA and I’m so glad I purchased it! 

The soft play tool set includes: a saw, a spanner, a hammer, a ruler, a screwdriver, a drill and a little tool box to keep all the tools in. 

The tools are really well made with lots of detail and the fabric used is quite tough which is great for durability with a teething baby! The colours are vibrant and fun and Arjun spends quite a lot of his time playing with this set when at home and he’s often spotted out with one of his random tools when on play dates too. His favourite is the spanner and the drill - he finds the shapes fascinating and there's lots to chew on! 

I would highly recommend this tool set especially for the price you’re paying.

 

Felt Food Sandwich Set

Slightly off the topic, but another lovely gift we received was from Arjun’s Puaji (aunt) and Fufarji (uncle).  I absolutely love it! This one was more inspired by me as the foodie!

This toy set has come at a great time especially as we are weaning – it’ll help Arjun learn about foods as he grows.  The bright and fun colours make it really appealing, Arjun loves picking different bits up and exploring with different shapes, colours and sizes.

When he’s a little older, this will encourage creative role play (and to prepare mummy’s sandwiches! ;)).  For now though, he loves to chew the different soft bits of food.  His favourite is already lettuce!
